How does a mouthguard help?

According to Australian Dental Association, approximately a third of injuries to the teeth is related to sport. These can be prevented by making sure a mouthguard is worn. Not only teeth, lips and cheeks are protected by a mouthguard, but by buffering the impact it helps to prevent damage to the jaw, neck or brain.

Frequently Asked Questions

A sports mouthguard is a device that is worn over the teeth and gums during physical activity to protect the mouth and teeth from injury.

Anyone who participates in sports or other physical activities that involve contact or the risk of injury to the mouth should wear a sports mouthguard. This includes children, teenagers, and adults.

There are three main types of sports mouthguards: stock mouthguards, boil-and-bite mouthguards, and custom-made mouthguards. At Mildura Family Dental, we offer custom-made mouthguards in a range of colours.

Custom-made sports mouthguards are made specifically for your mouth, using impressions taken by your dentist. This ensures a comfortable fit and maximum protection.

After impressions of your teeth are taken, a dental laboratory will create your mouthguard. This process typically takes a few days.

Sports mouthguards should be replaced every 1-2 years, or sooner if they become damaged or show signs of wear.

Sports mouthguards are often not covered by dental insurance, but it is best to check with your insurance provider to determine your coverage.

Custom-made sports mouthguards are typically made by a dentist. You can get one at Mildura Family Dental in Australia, where we offer a range of colours to choose from.

Types of mouthguards:

Custom-made: this type of a mouthguard provides the best protection. At Mildura Family Dental Your dentist would take impressions of your teeth to make a mouthguard that would fit snugly around your teeth and gums in an appropriate thickness to provide the best cushioning effect against an impact.

Boil-and-bite: these are over-the-counter mouthguards that are warmed in hot water and then adapted around the teeth and gums. As the fit is not ideal these are less effective to protect against an injury and are less comfortable to wear. However it is better to wear a mouthguard, then none at all.

Australian Dental Association (ADA) recommends wearing a custom-made mouthguard.
