General Anaesthesia

General anesthesia is a safe and effective option for patients who require extensive dental work or have dental anxiety. At Mildura Family Dental, we work closely with Mildura Private Hospital to provide our patients with the best possible care under general anesthesia. We only refer patients to the hospital for general anesthesia procedures, as they have the necessary equipment and medical professionals on hand to ensure a safe and successful procedure. Your dentist will discuss the procedure and answer any questions you may have about general anesthesia before referring you to the hospital.

General anaesthetic is most commonly used in complicated oral surgery procedures, but is also an option you can discuss with us if you have any major anxieties related to dental procedures, such as phobias or traumatic past experiences.

General anaesthesia causes a state of complete unconsciousness, and sleep can last for up to several hours post-operation. At Mildura Family Dental for all dental procedures under general anaesthetic, we work closely with specifically trained medical anaesthetists in the hospital setting. The anaesthetists assess each patient, administer anaesthesia and monitor patients before and after the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

General anesthesia is a type of sedation that causes complete loss of consciousness and sensation, allowing for painless surgery or other medical procedures.

General anesthesia is typically used for complex surgical procedures, or in cases where other types of sedation may not be effective.

General anesthesia is typically administered by an anesthesiologist, who is a specially trained medical doctor.

While general anesthesia is generally safe, there are some risks associated with the procedure, including allergic reactions, breathing problems, and postoperative confusion.

Your doctor will provide specific instructions on how to prepare for general anesthesia, which may include fasting for a certain amount of time prior to the procedure.

General anesthesia is typically administered through an IV, which causes you to lose consciousness within a few seconds. You will be closely monitored throughout the procedure.

After the procedure is complete, you will be taken to a recovery area where you will be closely monitored until the effects of the anesthesia wear off.

General anesthesia is typically covered by health insurance, but it is best to check with your insurance provider to determine your coverage. At Mildura Family Dental in Australia, we offer general anesthesia for certain dental procedures.
