Root Canal Treatment
Root canal or endodontic treatment is a common dental procedure that treats the inside of the tooth. The procedure involves removal of the inflamed or infected tissue and careful cleaning and disinfection of the inside of the tooth. A rubber-like root filling is placed and the tooth is restored with a filling or a crown. With the modern equipment and techniques, the prognosis of root canal treatment is very good and the tooth continues to function like any other tooth.
Contrary to jokes about the matter, modern endodontic treatment is very similar to having a routine filling and usually can be completed in one or two appointments, depending on the condition of your tooth and your personal circumstances. At Mildura Family Dental you can expect a comfortable experience during and after your root canal appointment. If pulp inflammation or infection is left untreated, it can cause further pain or lead to an abscess.
When is root canal treatment needed?
If a tooth has a cavity or a chip that causes mild sensitivity it can often be managed by having a filling or a veneer placed. However, if the tooth is causing a throbbing ache these measures will not be appropriate and root canal treatment or tooth extraction is needed. Your dentist will discuss your options depending on the tooth's position, function and other alternatives available.
Why save the tooth?
Saving the natural tooth with root canal treatment has many advantages:
Efficient chewing with normal biting force and sensation
Protects other teeth from excessive wear or strain
Natural appearance of your smile
Limits the need for potentially more costly dental work to replace the tooth
With proper care, most teeth that have had root canal treatment can last a lifetime.
