Oral Hygiene and Periodontal Disease
Oral Hygiene is integral in preventing dental problems such as cavities and gum disease. Our dentists at Mildura Family Dental are experienced in promoting and providing oral hygiene practices to adults and children.
As part of your examination your dentist will assess the health of your periodontal (gum) tissues. The best home techniques will be discussed to address your individual needs and to help maintain the health of your gums in the most efficient and effective way. To assist your home care practice, the dentist will remove calculus (tartar), plaque, staining and apply decay-preventing agent if indicated.
Regular professional examination of your teeth and gums, together with appropriate home care, are the best ways to maintain your dental health and prevent problems that may recquire more complex treatment.
Signs of poor oral hygiene and gum health:
gums bleeding on brushing or flossing
discolouration of teeth
Periodontal disease is the later stages of gum disease. This is when the bacterial infection under the gums progresses deeper and affects the bone and tissues supporting the tooth. Some of the signs include:
gums receeding away from the teeth
swollen gums with "pocketing"
If not treated, in time the bone anchoring the teeth in the jaw will dissolve, making the teeth loose and eventually the teeth will fall out.
To help prevent periodontal disease developing or to slow down it's pregression it is important to seek help from the dentist and also use the correct oral hygiene practices at home.
