A mouthguard is a thick rubber shield that fits over your teeth and gums to protect your mouth from injury during sports that involve a high risk of impact to the face.
How does a mouthguard help?
According to Australian Dental Association, approximately a third of injuries to the teeth is related to sport. These can be prevented by making sure a mouthguard is worn. Not only teeth, lips and cheeks are protected by a mouthguard, but by buffering the impact it helps to prevent damage to the jaw, neck or brain.
Types of mouthguards:
Custom-made: this type of a mouthguard provides the best protection. At Mildura Family Dental Your dentist would take impressions of your teeth to make a mouthguard that would fit snugly around your teeth and gums in an appropriate thickness to provide the best cushioning effect against an impact.
Boil-and-bite: these are over-the-counter mouthguards that are warmed in hot water and then adapted around the teeth and gums. As the fit is not ideal these are less effective to protect against an injury and are less comfortable to wear. However it is better to wear a mouthguard, then none at all.
Australian Dental Association (ADA) recommends wearing a custom-made mouthguard.
